"Swing dance" is a group of dances that developed with the swing style of jazz music starting in 1920s, and includes Lindy Hop, Charleston, Shag, Balboa, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Jive, Rock and Roll, and Jitterbug. Lindy Hop, the most popular swing dance, is an American social dance (which could be danced competitively as well), the original swing dance, developed in 1920 in Harlem's Savoy Ballroom, New York. Lindy Hop is made up of 8 beat and 6 beat moves and is a combination of solo and partner dancing. Lindy Hop is similar to Charleston, and its basic moves include sugar pushes, side passes, swing outs, aerials, spins, and other. The dance is all about having fun, interacting with your partner, improvising, and playing with the music.
The Charleston is a dance named for the city of Charleston, South Carolina, was developed in African-American communities in the United States in 1920s, and became popular after appearing along with the song, "The Charleston," by James P. Johnson in the Broadway musical Runnin' Wild in 1923. Charleston could be danced solo, with a partner, or in groups, and includes swaying arms, fast movement and kicks of the feet, and hops. Charleston is one of the most popular and easy to learn swing dances. West Coast Swing is a partner dance originated from Lindy Hop, and the most sophisticated dance in the swing dance family. West Coast Swing is called a slotted dance. With graceful movements combined with twirls and pushes, it could be improvised to suit any form of music. Comparing to the Lindy Hop and the East Coast Swing, the West Coast Swing is a slower dance. East Coast Swing, almost identical to the Jitterbug, is a circular, rotating social swing dance with many wraps, tunnels, and turns, which is danced to a count of 6, and slightly faster than the West Coast Swing. East Coast Swing basic steps are: triple step, triple step, rock step.
Jive, the fastest of the latin dances, originated in the United States in 1940, and was influenced by the Boogie, Rock & Roll, Jitterbug, East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. Jive is one of the five International Latin dances, and could be danced both competitively and socially. Happy and energetic dance, Jive is filled with knee-lifting, bending, rocking of the hips, kicks, flicks, and spins, and doesn't move around the dance floor like other dances.
